The H3 Alpha won several of the most challenging categories in the competition, including Off-Road Performance, Exterior Styling, and Empirical Scoring, which measures data such as acceleration and braking, power to weight, and ramp over angles. The test consisted of a 1,000-mile curriculum on streets, highways, rocky trails, desert sand dunes, water crossings, and steep hills. Elevations ranged from sea level to in excess of 6,000 feet. With its new 5.3L V-8 engine, rear locking differential, class-leading ground clearance and aggressive all-terrain tires, the H3 Alpha excelled in virtually every on- and off-pavement driving environment.
The 2008 competitors’ list included six new four-wheel-drive sport-utility vehicles: the H3 Alpha and the full-size Hummer H2, the Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee CRD, the Nissan Pathfinder, and the Toyota Land Cruiser. Hummer is intent on becoming the off-pavement adventure brand, and in the three years since the introduction of the H3, Hummer made major improvements each year, culminating in the H3 Alpha.
